She holds an MFA in creative writing from San Francisco State. She has worked as an editor, publisher, bookseller, and journalist. What inspired you to write Candid Family Portrait?

Much of Candid Family Portrait has to do with how artists struggling to balance day jobs, art, and parenthood. You were parenting a young child when you wrote this book. What was your approach to carving out the time to write as well?

In Candid Family Portrait you have a section titled “Alloparenting.” Can you explain what that term means?

Can you discuss June’s character and her relationship to femininity, motherhood, and feminism?

Can you discuss Vince’s character and his relationship to masculinity and fatherhood?

The fairy tale of the selkie—a woman who can shapeshift into a seal—comes up multiple times in Candid Family Portrait, including when June’s mother tells her the story as a child, and again when June tells a modified version of the story to her own daughter as a bed-time story. Can you discuss what role this fairy tale plays in your story?
